The founder of Insomniac Events and Inthemix Most Powerful Man in EDM Pasquale Rotella has been having legal problems for some time now. Now it seems he is facing 14 years in prison for charges of bribery, embezzlement, conspiracy and conflict of interest. Rotella is engaged to Holly Madison, one of the three playmates from Girls Next Door, with whom he has an infant daughter.

The FBI is not too crazy about Rotella as the founder of Insomniac Events, a company which hosts events that attract a large amount of Ecstasy users. Since Nocturnal Wonderland was founded in LA during 1995 Insomniac’s massive raves have rapidly spread around the globe. Insomniac Events hosts Electric Daisy Carnival, Electric Forest, Beyond Wonderland, Audiotistic and more. These are events that draw hundreds of thousands of EDM fans at a time.

The LA Times reported that 14 ravers have died at a Insomniac or Go Ventures parties since 2006. Most of them ODed on a combination of Ecstasy and other drugs, one was a drunk driver and the other was a speedball.

Last year Rotela was charged for unlawful business dealings with the LA Coliseum, along with LA Coliseum officials Patrick Lynch, Todd DeStefano, and Reza Gerami. The scandal is fairly complex. It is alleged that union workers were being paid under the table and there are allegations that millions in cash was being passed between promoters and city officials in bribes. Read all about it.

Now it look’s like Holly Madison’s Baby Daddy might be going to prison for fourteen years. Radar Online posted the charges and other important details. Currently Rotella is out on $1.8 million dollars bail. He is scheduled to appear on July 29th, just two weeks before his wedding to Madison.

In tech news it turns out that all Dutchman are not house music DJ’s, some of them are also hackers. Spanish police arrested a 35-year-old Dutchman named Sven Olaf Kamphuis in connection to a massive Internet attack. The Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attack, slowed down connections around the world for two days last March.

Kamphuis is purported to be the founder of the web server known as CyberBunkers. According to their website CyberBunkers will host “services to any Web site ‘except child pornography and anything related to terrorism.’ The company was reputedly founded in a Cold War bunker in the Netherlands but as of today the physical location of the organization is unknown.

The BBC reports that in order to coordinate such an attack hundreds of computers would have to be programmed to visit a website over and over again at the same time. On a large enough scale this has the effect of backing up Internet connections for normal, God-fearing Internet users.

In the world of censorship Google has reported that requests to block content are way up in India, as well as Brazil and Russia. According to the Hindu Times, “The Indian government nearly doubled its requests to Google for removal of content in the second half of 2012 as compared to the first six months, the seventh transparency report from the Internet giant has noted.”

They elaborated with the exact figures, “The report, published on April 25, noted that governments around the world are seeking censorship on the Web more than ever before. Between July and December 2012, Google had received more than 2,285 government requests to delete 24,149 pieces of information. In the first half of 2012, Google received 1,811 requests to remove 18,070 pieces of information,” and went on to point out, “The number of requests in the second half of 2012 went up by over 90 per cent compared to the first half of the year.”

If you have been wondering why smart people wrinkle their brows in confusion when you talk about EDM, consider this. The phrase does not only refer to electronic dance music and this is especially important if you are into tech news. Educational data mining (EDM) is an emerging discipline which is involved with collecting information from students on a large scale. The idea is that analysis of the data will prove beneficial but many people do not like the idea of having their life used for research.

Robert F.X. Sillerman the billionaire mogul and founder of Live Nation made headlines last summer when he told members of the press that he intended to buy about 50 major companies and festivals in the EDM industry. The amount he spent ended up being over one billion dollars, and he announced that he was reviving his company SFX Entertainment. Now in January 2013 he is in the words of the Miami Times, “poised to become the Tsar of Miami Beach nightlife.”

The Times revealed that SFX Entertainment has made a significant investment in Opium Group. Opium Group is responsible for some of the biggest nightclubs in Miami including: Cameo, Mansion, Mokai, and Opium at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino. Additionally he is in negotiations with Miami Management Group for Arcadia, LIV, and Story. Word is that he is offering deals that no one would refuse. All this means that Sillerman would hold an incredible sway over Miami dance culture.

Miami nightclubs are notorious for being a cut above the rest. After all that is what people go to Miami to do party. Miami is a powerhouse of the international EDM scene. All of the biggest house DJs in the world, Tiesto, David Guetta, SHM, all those guys, love to play Miami because it is fun and it pays well. However getting into the right club on the night when your favorite producer is playing and paying for drinks can get expensive. On New Year’s Eve tables and suites were going for $5000 to 100K and general admission was $200-400 depending on your sex.

This is not anything new for Sillerman who made his fortune buying radio and television station in the late Seventies. Then in 1998 he sold his company SFX Entertainment which included Live Nation, to Clear Channel Communications. He has also purchased Graceland and Simon Fuller Entertainment (American Idol) in the past. According to Forbes Sillerman is 64 and married with one child. He lives with his wife on an estate in South Hampton, New York. They also have a resort near Anguilla.

05/14/2013 Update:

I Heart Radio also known as Clear Channel Communications has announced they will be launching their first EDM channel Evolution. BBC 1 DJ Pete Tong will be hosting the ‘All Gone Pete Tong’ show. Clear Channel is the biggest radio group in the United States with 850 stations and 237 million listeners each month.

Starting November 12th the new station will join hundreds of other I Heart Radio’s other online radio stations. The new genre station is the radio giant’s answer to the growing segment of the population that is streaming their music from sources such as Pandora and Spotify. According to a statement made by experts to the New York Times, AM/FM radio stations continue to be America;s top source for music, however, Internet radio has replaced CD’s at second place.

‘All Gone Pete Tong’ will be a two hour live show featuring guest sets from celebrity DJ’s such as Diplo, Wolfgang Gartner, and Fatboy Slim. It is a similar format to the hit show he has been hosting in the UK on BBC 1 since the early 90s. It will also feature the Top 100 EDM tracks on Beatport in an effort to promote I Heart Radio’s new Beatport page.

Previous online I Heart Radio stations like Electric Sound Stage and Trancid played dance music, but were a pre engineered playlist format. This is the first live form program. Is this a sign that mainstream radio is not far behind? With 850 stations, Clear Channel is in a position to change terrestrial radio formats should the new programming prove successful.

In an interview Pete Tong stated, “There’s been a huge rise in the popularity of dance music in America, but it’s been quite polarized on the commercial end of it, the top 4 or 5 percent. I think there’s so much more to the genre, and that’s what Evolution is going to be about: broadening that base, providing the platform for the other 95 percent.”

But you do not have to be a famous English radio DJ to see that. Just go to a dance festival in any city near you.

Diplo and Friends was recently awarded the nightime drive time slot on the Clear Channel station 98.7 in Los Angeles airing weekends at 10pm.

People are talking a lot of smack about Brazilian glamor model Nana Gouvea after she and her husband used the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy for an opportune photo shoot. Donning grey leggings, boots and a long sleeved black tee, she set out to document her own ass amid the wreckage.

The resulting picture, which she posted on Facebook, have gone viral, with people taking it upon themselves to Photoshop her into nearly every disaster that ever befell mankind in the 20th century. The Big One (Wobble mixtape) is a compilation of California bass artists who wobble. Get it? Because it is the Big One that people are always talking about, knock on wood? The video is some old footage from the San Francisco earthquake of 1906 from the Prelinger archives. I may have also been inspired by a certain “terrestrial” radio show.
